When summer is fast approaching every family has more time to enjoy each other’s company. Summer means more time for fun and more time for each other. And what would summer be without going to the beach and enjoying water sports?

One type of water sports that has caught the attention of both young and old is wakeboarding. While it has just gotten into the limelight wakeboarding has in fact been in existence for several decades already. Some people may not be aware of it because it is actually a combination of other more famous water sports like surfing and water skiing.

Wakeboarding has a lot of similarity with surfing and it was even called skurfing before it became known as wakeboarding. Wakeboarding may have a different name now but it really makes use of the principles being used by skiers and surfers.

If you have seen a person holding on to a rope while being pulled by a motorboat then that is wakeboarding. That person actually has his feet on a surfboard while being pulled by a motorboat of great speed. Competitive wakeboarding can be more exciting because the wakeboarder is pulled at an even greater speed while performing different stunts.

Wakeboarding has come a long way from its origins and is now included in the line up of competitive sports all over the world. A wakeboarding association has been established in 1989 and it is now included in the X games.

A person who wants to get into the sports should arm himself with a wakeboard, a rope and a motorboat. However, it is not necessary for a wakeboarder to buy himself a motorboat because there are wakeboarding areas that rents out motorboats. Some wakeboarders who have motorboats also share with their peers.

Wakeboarding is a lot more exciting that plain skiing or surfing because it offers the thrill of being pulled by a very fast motorboat with only the rope as the control. A person can also practice different stunts like the Elephant, Tantrum or Whirlybird and amaze his audience with these antics.

A lot of people are becoming enamored with wakeboarding because while it is not really cheap, a person only needs to have a wakeboard, rent a motorboat or practice with some friends and then find an exciting beach for wakeboarding. Orlando in Florida is a good place to practice wakeboarding skills.

Wakeboarding is no longer just a man’s sport because more women have gone into wakeboarding not only as a hobby but as a competitive sport. Take the case of Tara Hamilton who won the first female wakeboarding competition. A lot of women are also going for the sport and their list is growing long.

But like all the other sports a wakeboarder should practice his basic wakeboarding skills first before attempting the more dangerous and complicated stunts. There is no need to rush because there is a lot of time to learn wakeboarding.
