There are thee main forms the miracle berry can come in. Fresh whole fruit, extracted granules and pressed tablets. All three types have been sold for several years now and we've tried all of them from several sources. There are also a few other types in the works - for example, chewing gum might be available soon.

What's the best type of miracle fruit?

Having tasted all the different ways the berry can be prepared, we have to say that the natural form - fresh whole berries - is the most satisfying and the most effective. Nothing is quite like eating an innocuous red berry only to find your taste sense transformed in the most mysterious ways. You also get to fully appreciate the texture and flavour of the flesh this way. In addition, you have a seed afterwards to grow your own plants.

The miracle fruit extract comes in the form of red granules. They taste remarkably good - quite sweet and very similar to the fruit themselves. Miracle fruit extract is the pure active ingredient of the miracle berry. It is actually miraculin, the glycoprotein that causes the sour to sweet effect. The extracted granules are also very easy to use - you can fully coat your tongue with them for the most effective taste changing sensation meaning you need much less. We found the effect to be just as powerful as the fresh fruit.

Finally there are tablets. These are the same as the extract except they are impure as they are mixed with corn starch and compressed. This means they have a slightly unpleasant taste and are slightly hard to dose. Also, some people need more than one tablet to get the taste tripping effect. However, they do work and are still amazing fun when trying different foods and drinks.

Which type should I get?

Although the fresh berries are slightly more fun than the miracle fruit extract granules as you get to bite into a whole berry, there are other factors to consider. The problem with fresh fruit is that they only grow in hot climates and that they spoil very quickly. Fresh fruit start to go off one or two days after being picked and then the effect is ruined. This means you need to live close to a farm to get fruit quickly enough to work with. Also, it means it is very difficult to store them for long periods of time. Miracle fruit granules - extracted miraculin - and the tablets don't have this problem. They can easily be stored for long periods and are still just as effective. However, because it tastes much better, is easier to use and has a better effect, we recommend miracle fruit extract as the best type of miracle berry to try.
